FBC Manby Bowdler Wins £75,000 Compensation For Clubbers Injured at Wolverhampton City Council Events- 16/07/2010

West Midlands’ law firm FBC Manby Bowdler LLP has helped six clubbers win compensation after slipping and injuring themselves during an evening out at nightclub events organised by Wolverhampton City Council.

The Willenhall office of FBC Manby Bowdler was instructed by six claimants, and pursued a group action against Wolverhampton City Council, after they injured themselves following a slip on spilled liquid or dropped bottles at special “Cheeky Monkey” or “Blast Off” nightclub events held at Wolverhampton Civic Hall between 2003 and 2006.

The claimants alleged that Wolverhampton City Council had taken insufficient steps to ensure that the floors were kept clean; that drinks were kept away from the dance floor; and that sufficient cleaning and monitoring staff were employed.

Represented by Mrs Sandra Buxton, Senior Legal Executive at FBC Manby Bowdler, and Mr Steve Fisher, Counsel of Kew Chambers, four of the claimants were successful at Walsall County Court, the remaining two actions having been settled prior to trial. The claimants were awarded in the region of £75,000 in compensation plus costs.

Tim Gray, Partner and Head of FBC Manby Bowdler’s Personal Injury Department said: “The fact that there were a number of incidents over a long timeframe undoubtedly helped us to demonstrate that there was lack of reasonable care shown towards the people attending these events, by the management on an on-going basis.

“People are entitled to enjoy a night out safely. Not only did our claimants suffer painful injuries, they also had to take time off from their work and studies for which they are entitled to compensation.”

FBC Manby Bowdler tackles a wide range of personal injury work, gaining clients compensation for injuries from a whole range of accidents including slips and trips, accidents at work, and road traffic accidents.

In the last 12 months the firm has secured a number of major settlements for clients, including a £4.5 million settlement to pay for accommodation and 24-hour care; a settlement equivalent to £2 million, two settlements of over £500,000 for pedestrians who suffered head injuries, one of whom will suffer life long epilepsy; and a £700,000 settlement for a car passenger left wheelchair dependent.

With 39 partners, FBC Manby Bowdler is one of the largest law firms in the West Midlands. The firm has offices in Wolverhampton, Willenhall, Telford, Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth.
