New website helps charities combat fraud

26/10/2016

FBC Manby Bowdler's Stuart Rea, an expert on charities, has welcomed a new website helping charitable organisations in the fight against fraud.

The Charity Commission, in collaboration with members of the Charity Sector Counter Fraud Group, this week launched Charities Against Fraud, as an initial point of reference for trustees, staff and volunteers who want to find out more about tackling fraud in their charity.

The website, unveiled during Charity Fraud Awareness Week, includes guidance, top tips, case studies, as well as signposting users to other organisations tackling charity fraud.

Stuart said: “Each year, fraud costs businesses, individuals and charities billions of pounds. It is vital that trustees and staff employed by charities can recognise the warning signs of fraud and importantly, know what to do if the worst happens"

The Charity Commission's top tips to reduce your charity’s vulnerability to fraud include:

  • Develop a strong counter fraud culture where staff are encouraged to play their part in the fight against fraud.

  • Have in place and robustly apply internal financial controls.

  • Encourage staff to voice concerns.

  • Have a fraud response plan so that everyone knows what to do and when - stay calm but act quickly when incidents do occur.

  • Ensure you report incidents to Action Fraud and to the Commission, via the dedicated reporting facility: RSI@charitycommission.gsi.gov.uk.

If you run a charity or are a trustee of a charity and would like information on how your organisation can be further supported in the fight against potential fraud, please contact Stuart by email on S.Rea@fbcmb.co.uk or call 01743 284159.
