Reporting from the MAA

Last week, along with 200 other delegates, I attended the Midlands Aerospace Alliance conference at the Lloyds Bank AMTC at Ansty Park, Coventry.

Supported by UTC Aerospace Systems, as per previous years the line up of speakers was extremely impressive. At the beginning of the day we heard from the Chief Economist and Director of Policy at ADS about the global outlook for the sector and the implications for the UK, the second largest aerospace sector in the world, which on balance, it has to be said looks pretty rosy.

Speakers followed from Sharing in Growth, Rolls Royce and the Aerospace Growth Partnership covered topics such as how suppliers can be more competitive and how collaboration can and will build a stronger supply chain.

David Bailey from Aston Business School gave us a great insight into the automotive sector and his view of the Midlands manufacturing economy, with NatWest, KPMG and Meridian Capital  giving showcasing the level of M&A activity across the sector and why so much interest was being shown from US companies in UK ones.

After lunch Paul Kahn, President of Airbus Group UK, gave us his views of trends in the sector from his perspective, swiftly followed by examples of how NATEP is helping businesses develop products.

The day was wrapped up by David Danger, MD of UTC Aerospace Systems- Marston Aerospace and a fascinating talk from Flt Lt Jonny Dowen of the @RAFTyphoonTeam, who ended with a video shot from the cockpit of his Typhoon doing speeds and stunts that were amazing.

In summary, a fast paced event which showed that the aerospace sector is in good shape, with the future looking bright globally and also for us in the UK.  Clive Snowdon, Chairman, and Dr Andrew Mair, Chief Executive of MAA ,are hopefully proud of the quality of the event they put on.

Hope to see you there next year!
