What Our Apprentices Say

"I have been with the firm for almost four years now and in that time I have completed the Paralegal Apprenticeship and had the opportunity to start the 6 year Solicitor Apprenticeship which I am halfway through.

FBCMB was the place where I wanted to undertake my apprenticeship as the firm is known as an award winning regional law firm and really local to me. Starting my apprenticeship at the age of 18, and not having the opportunity to study law at A-Level, meant that I did not have an understanding of the different areas of law and what would suit me best. I was therefore drawn to the fact that FBCMB offers a range of business and personal services to clients and that each department was successful in doing so. In addition to this, I really enjoyed the welcoming, family-feel to the firm that I felt on the assessment day, which has been my experience from the day that I started.

During the course of my apprenticeship, I have been exposed to a wide range of work, drafting styles and client management all whilst being supported through my studies. My supervisor is always getting me involved in new initiatives and is keen to ensure that I am constantly progressing by offering me a variety of work and opportunities such as attending court. The earn-whilst-you-learn benefit to the apprenticeship scheme has also meant that I have been able to achieve personal goals such as buying my first home.

I am a very big advocate for the apprenticeship scheme as an alternative route into the legal profession in general, but I am even more of an advocate for an apprenticeship with FBCMB! From the trainee and junior group we have here at the firm, to the invaluable experience I am getting each and every day from working with professionals who excel in their field, being an apprentice at this firm really is the best choice I have made so far in my legal career."

Rowan Jones

Apprentice Solicitor

I am currently halfway through my 3rd year as a Solicitor Apprentice at FBC Manby Bowdler. I am based in the matrimonial team; however, I have had experience working in Private Client Shropshire and Wolverhampton, and with our Agricultural & Renewables teams.

Since the start of my apprenticeship, I have been directly involved with live client matters, attending client meetings from the start to end of matters, and also being responsible for correspondence to clients, other professionals, and the UK Court system. My line managers and supervisors have all been extremely supportive of this route to qualification, as it allows me to develop legal knowledge and also the soft skills such as communication, team-work, and file management which all make a successful and reputable Solicitor.

FBC Manby Bowdler has also offered many opportunities to develop my professional career beyond purely legal work. I am part of the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team, a trained Mental Health First Aider, and also on the committee for my local Junior Lawyers Division (JLD). Both my team and the wider firm are very supportive of these commitments as they help to increase my knowledge of the commercial role solicitors and law firms have in the wider community.

My degree studies are completed through BPP University, and I have day release one day per week to prepare materials, attend lectures, and work on exam-style questions. I also complete coursework each term, to build up my portfolio and help me to develop skills necessary to pass the Solicitors Qualifying Exams.

Although my apprenticeship end date is still a long way off, I feel extremely confident that the training provided by FBC Manby Bowdler and BPP will ensure that I am well-prepared and suitably proficient for my qualifying exams and the step up into Newly Qualified work.

Noa Lloyd

Apprentice Solicitor

I am currently 9 months into my Business Administration Apprenticeship within the Family Department at FBC Manby Bowdler and couldn’t wish for anything better. From the moment I stepped into the office for my interview there was an extremely welcoming, warm feeling, and I went home from the interview really excited, before even finding out I had been offered the job.

My line manager has been my biggest supporter since starting in my role. She made it very clear on day one that she was always going to be available to give me however much support I needed, whether that was a little or a lot. We have monthly 1-2-1 meetings where we discuss my wellbeing at work as well as having weekly catch ups where we discuss my workload and possible projects we could set up, based on the current needs of the firm. My manager has pushed me to get involved with many different activities within the firm to aid my personal and professional development.

Since starting at FBC Manby Bowdler, I have had the opportunity to try my hand at a wide range of work such as day to day office administration, business projects, and secretarial work such as picking up dictations, drafting letters and communicating with clients. I have even had the chance to begin working on a live file, with the Fee Earner’s guidance, to follow the matter along so that I am able to gain the experience of seeing a matter through from start to finish.

My apprenticeship has been affiliated with In-Comm Training Services and I have nothing but positive things to say about them. I was assigned a Tutor who I meet with on a monthly basis. My Tutor has always been an email away which has been a massive help, in-between meetings, when completing college assignments. The best thing about training with FBC Manby Bowdler and In-Comm Training Services is that, after the initial training sessions at In-Comm are completed, the programme is fully remote, and all assignments and meetings can be done from the office.

As the end date of my apprenticeship is quickly approaching, I am actively looking into my options for the future and, although I do not know exactly what that means for me yet, I know that FBC Manby Bowdler is a firm for life. My favorite aspect of working for FBC Manby Bowdler is the dedication they show not only to their client’s, but to their staff too.

Lia Sutherland

Business Support Apprentice

I am in my second year of the Solicitor Apprenticeship at FBC Manby Bowdler, and I am based in the Litigation team at our Shrewsbury office. The apprenticeship involves working in the office for four days a week, and studying for one day a week towards my degree in Law and Legal Practice and the Solicitors Qualifying Examination.

The on-the-job experience I have gained during my apprenticeship has been invaluable as I have had many opportunities that wouldn’t have been available to me had I taken the traditional university route, for example attending client meetings and hearings at court. The practical aspect of the apprenticeship has also assisted me with my studies as there have been many occasions where I have been learning about something for my degree that I have already encountered in the workplace, bridging theory and real world application.

The firm and my colleagues are very supportive of me and my goals, and provide a great atmosphere for me to learn in. My colleagues are experts in their field and being able to work alongside them is amazing as there is no better environment to ask for help in and I learn something new every single day. I feel fully integrated as part of my immediate team and the firm.

I have regular meetings with both my workplace supervisors and my university coaches to keep track of my progress and also to set targets to ensure I am constantly challenging myself to expand my expertise. The solicitor apprenticeship has not only allowed me to develop my legal skills and knowledge, but also general life skills such as confidence, team-working and time management.

I would recommend the solicitor apprenticeship route to anyone aspiring to enter the legal profession.

Maisie Addinell

Apprentice Solicitor

"I am undertaking the L7 Solicitors Apprenticeship with BPP which takes 6 years to complete (may sound daunting but it’s the same amount of time it takes to qualify the traditional way!). The most beneficial aspect of the apprenticeship is the amount of practical experience I have had exposure to and gained. By the time I qualify, I will have assisted in and managed a number of transactions of my own, setting me up to be a confident corporate solicitor. I chose this route as I knew it would develop my skills both personally and professionally. I knew I wanted the independence of working and earning my own money but also having the academic qualifications to underpin my practical experience was also important. FBCMB have provided the best working environment and support in order to aid my development and I couldn’t thank them enough for that. I would definitely recommend the solicitor apprenticeship route – as long as you are willing to put  in the hard work in, you can be sure that you will get a successful career out of it!"

Abigail Noakes

Qualified as a Solicitor in September 2023.

I am currently nearly 6 months into my Business Administration Apprenticeship with FBC Manby Bowdler, solely based at the Wolverhampton branch. I completed my GCSEs in June 2023 and at that time, I was torn between going back to high school for Sixth Form to achieve my A-Levels or undertaking an Apprenticeship and getting some real life exposure in the world of employment. I decided to apply for an Apprenticeship and after successfully obtaining one with FBC, I realised it was by far the best decision I could’ve made! My managers and colleagues have been extremely helpful and supportive, and I honestly couldn’t wish for a better job.

I am currently working within the Business Support Team on Front of House and it has taught me lots of amazing aspects that I definitely wouldn’t have learnt by going back to school. Being on Front of House has meant that I have dealt with a wide range of clients and situations, which I wouldn’t have been able to deal with in an effective manner without the help and 1-2-1 training received from FBC Manby Bowdler.

I would not hesitate to recommend an Apprenticeship to people who are unsure of what path to go down - especially with our company, FBC Manby Bowdler, with all their unconditional support! Whilst being face-to-face with clients and getting tasked queries every day, sometimes which are difficult, I am learning more facts about the ‘World of Law’. As a 16-year-old with not much work experience, I feel that I have settled in really well and I look forward to going into the office every morning to work with the dedicated staff at FBC!
