Hospital investment to tackle sepsis welcomed

A lawyer who specialises in medical negligence has welcomed moves by a Shropshire hospital trust to speed up the diagnosis and treatment of sepsis.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital (SATH) NHS Trust recently installed new equipment including blood analyser machines and established new procedures to enable doctors and nurses to take quicker action over the potential deadly disease.

Tim Gray, Lead Partner of FBC Manby Bowdler’s Personal Injury and Medical Negligence Department, said it was good to see the trust taking a proactive approach.

“Sepsis is a very serious condition and can easily be missed. It is a serious complication of an infection and, if undiagnosed and untreated, it can lead to multiple organ failure and death.

“In cases where treatment is delayed, it could have long-term effects – according to the UK Sepsis Trust one in four survivors suffer permanent life changing after effects.

“The new procedures and equipment at the SATH aim to not only speed up diagnosis but to ensure that targeted antibiotics are delivered quickly to patients, giving a great chance of survival.

“The early diagnosis and treatment of sepsis is vital to preventing deterioration and any potential long term permanent injury, that could lead to a case for clinical negligence.”

Tim is an experienced personal injury and clinical negligence lawyer, with more than 20 years experience in this field. He is the Lead Partner within the department and heads up the firm’s clinical negligence team, in addition to managing other high value and complex multi track cases, often involving head and spinal injuries and cases of amputation.
