FBCMB heads table at MIM Industrial Strategy Workshop
Made in the Midlands is a privately-run group for managing directors and owners of manufacturing and engineering firms in the Midlands.
FBC Manby Bowdler has been a Patron of the organisation since 2016. The prime aim of Made in the Midlands is to promote Midlands manufacturing and raise the profile of issues which specifically affect manufacturing businesses in the Midlands and the Black Country.
Directors of over 40 firms recently met Lord Mike Whitby at an industrial strategy workshop held in Birmingham. The purpose was to enable Midlands industry to feed directly into the government’s industrial strategy. The workshop was entitled “Our Manifesto for Britain”.
Andrew Wynne, Commercial Property Partner at FBC Manby Bowdler, led one of the round table discussions and presented to the meeting on upgrading infrastructure in the Black Country. He said:
“It was a very valuable opportunity to hear directly from businesses what they thought should be the government’s priority in the coming parliament. Midlands manufacturing is a significant part of the Birmingham and Black Country economy employing significant numbers of people and generating wealth for the region.”
Central to the ability for the West Midlands to deliver growth is having adequate infrastructure. The delegation discussed road railway and airport links. There was a debate about HS2 and how it is important that conurbations outside Birmingham such as Walsall Dudley and Wolverhampton have sufficient “feed-in routes” to the proposed network.
Addressing attendees at the end of the workshop Lord Whitby commented:
“The Midlands is a formidable exporting region with a strong skills base that is ultimately responsible for 25% of the UK’s total manufacturing output. What an opportunity we have here to feed directly into the government’s industrial strategy and ensure that the best interests of Midlands manufacturers are heard and considered regardless of what government are responsible for moving this strategy forward."
