Blow the whistle on World Cup domestic violence

18/06/2018

The World Cup will bring the nation together in a feast of football over the next few weeks. But it is also likely to bring real pain and despair with an increase in domestic abuse.

Harbinder Gosal, Senior Associate at FBC Manby Bowdler , says help is at hand.

There is nothing quite like the football World Cup. For one month every four years we all become fans as football fever sweeps the nation, particularly when England are playing.

But while much of the country enjoys the party atmosphere, sadly the evidence shows that the tournament also brings a huge spike in cases of domestic abuse.

Research from Lancaster University criminologist and former police officer Dr Stuart Kirby revealed that in one force area in England and Wales violent incidents increased by 38 per cent when England lost – but also rose by 26 per cent when they won.

The research monitored police reports of domestic violence during the World Cups of 2002, 2006 and 2010, and showed the problem became progressively worse with each new tournament

There is no excuse for domestic abuse of any kind. It is illegal and cannot be tolerated. Our advice is clear: If you fear you are at risk of an immediate violent attack, call 999 and ask for the police.

If you are worried that you face the threat of domestic violence in the longer term or looking to leave an abusive relationship, we can help.

We can advise you in relation to obtaining a non molestation order which is an injunctive order protecting you from further violence, intimidation and harassment. This order can also be extended to protect any children in your care, who are often exposed to the violence. Alongside this we can also look at whether you would be eligible to apply for an Occupation Order to regulate who should live at the family home and can lead to the violent partner being excluded from the property.

If your separation becomes permanent we can also advise in relation to child arrangements, divorce and settling the matrimonial finances.

Our award-winning Family team has extensive experience of dealing with divorce and domestic abuse. We’ll deal with your situation compassionately, confidentially and quickly so that you can get on with your life.

If you would like to discuss any issue around relationship break down and domestic abuse, please contact Harbinder on h.gosal@fbmb.co.uk or 01902 392420.
